Dan is a Michigan boy. Born and bred in mid-Michigan, he made his way to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan when he was eighteen. He’s been here ever since.
Dan’s path to becoming an accountant is about as untraditional as they come. After graduating from UofM with a BA in Communications, it was music that defined his early career. First, working in artist management and then as the drummer of Ann Arbor band Getaway Cruiser (Sony 550 Music), numbers slowly crept into his world by becoming the de-facto accountant for the band while touring the United States. When the band broke up and the money ran out, Getaway Cruiser’s CPA firm hired Dan and it’s been ‘game on’ ever since.
Dan began his career at Zingerman’s in 2010 in the Bakehouse finance department. Two years later, in 2012, he joined the then-fledgling Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory, as their first accounting manager. In 2014, he finally made the jump to ZingTrain, where he works as the accounting manager to this day. Dan is a member of Zingerman’s Governance Committee and was formally bestowed as the company’s IT Liasion™️ in a ceremony held in the Glass Room. There was thunderous ovation at this standing-room only affair.
What sets Dan apart is not just his enthusiasm for Finance and uncovering the story behind the numbers, but his desire to educate and train people to help them grow and to give them the tools and resources they need to make the right financial decisions. Always looking for new and innovative ways to harness the power of technology into the accounting sphere, he has led the charge to push the ZCoB accountants into the digital future and embrace online services, like Bill.com & Tallie Expense Reporting, in their work. The eagerness to teach is critical to the success of Open Book Management, and it has been critical in making Dan a ‘homegrown’ success story within the ZCoB.
